5 Things that Matter to Rural Physician Candidates (Beyond Compensation)

Posted by Doximity TF Team

In rural America, physician recruitment is a life or death issue for patients and hospitals alike. The National Rural Health Association (NRHA) reports that more than 25 percent of the U.S. population lives in rural areas, yet less than ten percent of the country’s doctors practice there. In fact, a new poll indicates that one out of every four people living in rural areas said they couldn't get the health care they needed and about a quarter of those said it's because their health care location was too far or difficult to get to.

Even more concerning, there’s actually a decreased life expectancy in rural America and hospital closures in rural towns aren’t helping. In the NPR poll, close to one out of every ten respondents said their small-town hospital had recently closed. As a physician recruiter, you know hiring and retaining candidates for rural opportunities is no easy task though. For some rural communities, the need is so dire their pitch is essentially that: come here and make a difference.

Women in Medicine Month: What Recruiters Should Know

Posted by Doximity TF Team

The rising number of women entering the medical field has spurred studies and debates about gender differences for decades. Do men and women really “doctor” differently? Evidence shows they do.

September is National Women in Medicine Month #WIMMonth, as declared by the American Medical Association. The AMA says female physicians have different professional aspirations and want the option to have a flexible work schedule. (The past three consecutive presidents of the AMA are women, by the way, including current president, Patrice A. Harris, MD.)

5 Surprising Perks of Locum Tenens Work

Posted by Doximity TF Team

This article was originally published by Dr. Peter Alperin in physicianleaders.org

More and more doctors are interested in locum tenens, and the benefits are positive for patients and doctors alike.

“Locum Tenens” is a direct translation of the Latin phrase meaning, “temporary work.” A locum tenens physician works in the place of a full-time physician when he or she is absent, or when a hospital or practice is short-staffed. For example, locum tenens may fill in for a physician on family or maternity leave or may be temporarily employed by a hospital or practice that is under-staffed.

Locum tenens is becoming more common. In fact, Doximity’s recent data report found a steep increase in interest among U.S. physicians in locum tenens job opportunities.

The popularity and necessity of locum tenens is rapidly growing. The Doximity Guide to Recruiting Primary Care Physicians

Posted by Doximity TF Team

Primary Care physicians are the backbone of the American healthcare system. Indeed, studies show that states with a higher ratio of primary care physicians have better health and lower rates of mortality (per National Institutes of Health): Patients who regularly see a primary care physician also have lower health costs than those without one.

This primary care physician workforce is best positioned to meet the needs of our population, yet an alarming shortage of primary care physicians is looming: the Association of American Medical Colleges predicts a shortage of between 21,100 and 55,200 primary care physicians by 2032. The major factor driving demand for physicians continues to be a growing, aging population. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the nation’s population is estimated to grow by more than 10% by 2032, with those over age 65 increasing by 48%.
