For the first time in history, there are more women than men in medical schools, according to data for the 2019-20 academic year from the Association of American Medical Colleges. It appears the future of healthcare is female! So, as we celebrate Women in Medicine Month, there’s an even greater emphasis on advancing equity and creating change for female physicians as well as their patients.

The rising number of women entering the medical field has spurred studies and debates about gender differences for decades. Do men and women really “doctor” differently? Evidence shows they do.
September is National Women in Medicine Month #WIMMonth, as declared by the American Medical Association. The AMA says female physicians have different professional aspirations and want the option to have a flexible work schedule. (The past three consecutive presidents of the AMA are women, by the way, including current president, Patrice A. Harris, MD.)

In 1960, there were roughly 200 women physicians in the U.S. As of March 2018, there are nearly 334k – approximately 34% of professionally active physicians (per the Henry J Kaiser Foundation). Data suggests that number is still rising. In fact, in 2017 the number of women enrolling in U.S. medical schools topped the number of men for the first time ever (per Medscape).
