This Friday, March 19th, marks one year from the last Match Day – and just over one year from the day COVID-19 was declared a pandemic. Residency program directors, along with soon-to-be residents across the nation, knew then that the pandemic could upend the 2020-21 residency selection cycle.

It’s been a year of virtual everything, and although many hospitals and recruiters are back to in-person interviews, online recruiting continues to play a front-seat role in getting the job done. It's vital to remember that first impressions with candidates are almost entirely online.
Did you find a candidate online who’s perfect for the position? The first encounter of any kind that you have with a potential candidate can shape the future of your relationship with them, so make sure to deliver it wisely.

Social shifts created by the pandemic are drawing people out of cities and into more rural areas. Country living has increased appeal: nearly half of all U.S. adults said they prefer to live in a small town or rural area in 2020, up from 39% in 2018, per a recent Gallup study.
The primary reason? Remote workers now have an opportunity to live where they want rather than living physically close to their jobs. It’s also easier to practice social distancing outside of urban areas. Small towns and rural areas are becoming more popular, but it’s important to ask: does this mean doctors are more willing to move to rural areas, too?

Before the pandemic, physician jobs were in high demand and most specialists felt they had ample opportunities in front of them. Then, with the onset of COVID-19, physician jobs saw a decrease in demand as many elective procedures and appointments came to a halt.
The good news is that industry experts say this dip in physician vacancies due to the pandemic is temporary, and opportunities for many specialties are already trending upward. A recent study from one recruitment firm says the pandemic’s fallout could drive up demand, as the public’s physical and mental health has likely worsened since the virus hit.

When COVID-19 erupted, physician recruiters jumped in, adopting an “all hands on deck” mindset. Physicians mobilized and raised their hands to ask, “How can we help?” And just weeks into the pandemic, there were moments of recognition across the country that served as inspiration to doctors and healthcare workers. There have been many dark days – and there are some still ahead. Thankfully, many hospitals and healthcare organizations have jumped in to help and offer hope. We’ve highlighted some of them here.
