How the Pandemic Has Supercharged the Use of Telemedicine

Posted by Doximity TF Team

As the pandemic goes on, people continue to stay at home and avoid doctor's office visits if they can. Because of this shift, physicians are worried about how to adequately care for their patients.

Even as the need for virtual visits and remote patient monitoring increases, the use of telemedicine is increasing exponentially, too. A recent report says telemedicine will grow by seven times by 2025 (per Frost & Sullivan). This “tsunami” of growth is validated by some real-world stats, too: between March 2 and April 14, 2020 virtual urgent care visits grew by 683%, and non-urgent virtual care visits grew by a staggering 4,345% (per Healthcare IT News).

Recruiting Physicians for Rural Positions: Time for a New Approach

Posted by Doximity TF Team

Although the physician shortage in rural America has long been a challenge for recruiters, it has become amplified right now. Nearly 20% of U.S. citizens live in rural locations, yet less than 10% of U.S. physicians practice there.

With a majority of elective care cancelled this past spring, and many people hesitant to go to a hospital because of coronavirus, Alan Morgan, the head of the National Rural Health Association says the coronavirus is a threat to rural hospitals that are already at the financial brink. Unfortunately, a limited number of physicians (and facilities closing) means many people will go without the medical care they need. In fact, 23% of people in rural areas already say access to good medical care and doctors is a major problem in their community, compared to 9% in suburban areas, per PMC.

It’s Taking Longer to Hire Physicians: 9 Tips for Recruiting Right Now

Posted by Doximity TF Team

The time to hire for new clinical roles has long been impacted by the physician shortage. While a record number of healthcare workers were furloughed in the past three months, the good news is that 312,000 jobs were added in May, whereas hospitals lost 134,900 positions in April, per Becker’s Hospital Review.

The process of recruiting physicians can take as little as a few months or as long as a year or more, depending on different factors. It takes twice as long to recruit a physician today than it did just a decade ago. Why? It’s all due “to a growing shortage that is expected to worsen as demand for physicians grows and supply remains flat,” says Travis Singleton, vice president of marketing at Merritt Hawkins.
